Jean Claire (Roberts) Crittenden died Tuesday evening April 11, 2017, at Legend Assisted Living Center, Tulsa, Oklahoma, where she has resided since March 2014. Jean Claire was born December 26, 1920 in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Birdie (Price) and George E. “Ernie” Roberts. She attended high school in Muskogee, Oklahoma where she was football attendant in 1938 and football queen in 1939. She graduated high school in 1939. She married her high school sweetheart, James W. Crittenden in 1941. Jean Claire moved to Paris, Texas in the early 1950’s, with her husband and two daughters, Linda Jean and Jerre Kay Crittenden. The family made a second move to Stillwater, Oklahoma in the mid 1950’s, where “Crit” managed Nelson Furniture Company.

Jean’s father, “Ernie Roberts,” founded Superior Mattress Company in Muskogee at a very early date in her life. When “Ernie” Roberts died in 1959, Jean’s family returned to Muskogee at that time. She, her husband and her brother, George E. “Sonny” Roberts, presided over the mattress firm. Superior Mattress Company was eventually formed as a corporation and renamed Ther-A-Pedic of Oklahoma. Jean worked alongside her husband and brother, managing the business until 1984, when they sold the manufacturing company to retire.

Jean loved to play bridge and helped form a bridge club with many well-known ladies of the community. Jean was the last living member of that bridge club until her death on April 11, 2017.

Jean Claire is survived by her daughters, Linda Farris and Kay Jayne and son-in-law Jim Richey. She is also survived by one granddaughter, Kimberly Rubin; grandson-in-law, Dr. Jeffery Rubin; two great grandchildren, Sophia and Alyson Rubin from Atlanta, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her brother, “Sonny” Roberts.

A funeral service celebrating the life of Jean Claire Crittenden will be held Monday April 17, 2017 at 12:00 Noon in the Rowsey Chapel St Paul United Church.
